SPECapc releases new benchmark for
Solid Edge Version 14 CAD/CAM software
WARRENTON, Va., April 28, 2004 - SPEC/GPC's Application
Performance Characterization (SPECapc) project group has released
an updated benchmark for systems running Solid Edge Version 14
CAD/CAM software from EDS PLM Solutions. The benchmark and initial
testing results from SPECapc members are available on SPEC's web
site (www.spec.org/gpc).
SPECapc for Solid Edge V14 is an updated benchmark that reflects
new features such as dynamic display clipping. It represents typical
user operations that are valuable in evaluating systems running
Solid Edge V14. The new benchmark runs on Windows 2000 and Windows
XP, and includes performance tests on four typical types of models:
- a well-head assembly with 2,546 parts and 3.8 million polygons;
- a DVD player with 40 parts and 200,000 polygons;
- a jet ski with seven parts and 46,000 polygons; and
- a landing strip and airplane scenario with nearly 11,000
parts and 3.35 million polygons.
The benchmark measures three areas that EDS PLM Solutions considers
equally important in evaluating performance of systems running
Solid Edge:
- graphics performance, measured by commonly used commands
in three modes: smooth, wireframe and smooth-shading with textures
and reflections;
- file I/O performance, measured by opening each model,
activating all entries, then closing each file while saving;
and
- CPU performance, measured by mass property calculations
on the well-head and landing-strip models.

criteria, review processes, and reporting formats."
SPECapc is a project group of the Graphics Performance Characterization
(GPC) Group, which in turn is part of the Standard Performance
Evaluation Corp. (SPEC). SPEC is a non-profit corporation formed
to establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of relevant
benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance
computers. SPEC's membership includes computer hardware and software
vendors, and leading universities and research facilities worldwide.
