SPECapc boosts complexity, variety
in new 3ds max 7 benchmark software

WARRENTON, Va., April 27, 2005 -- SPEC/GPC’s Application Performance Characterization (SPECapc) project group has released a new benchmark for systems running 3ds max 7 animation software. The benchmark and initial testing results are available for downloading on this web site .

SPECapc for 3ds max 7 includes new and improved workloads that contain larger models, more representative graphics content, greater complexity, and a wider variety of primitives. Landscape and architectural fly-through scenes have been added to better represent typical customer workloads.

New scoring in SPECapc for 3ds max 7 makes the effects of different graphics card and CPU configurations more readily apparent in the reported results. The benchmark reports results for individual tests, and composite scores in two performance areas: interactive graphics and CPU render. Also reported are cost per composite (the list price of the configuration divided by the composite score) for interactive and CPU render categories. The overall composite score for all tests, not considered by SPECapc as a representative metric for this application, has been eliminated.

SPECapc for 3ds max 7 can be run under both OpenGL and DX, and results for either API can be submitted for publication on the SPEC/GPC web site.

“SPECapc for 3ds max 7 is much more than an update to conform with a new application version,” says Dan Bennett, SPECapc chair. “It reflects major improvements to the entire performance measurement process – from larger models and a wider range of tests, to new scoring that more accurately represents which resources are being dedicated to which tasks.”

SPECapc is a project group of the Graphics Performance Characterization (GPC) Group, which in turn is part of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC). SPEC is a non-profit corporation that establishes, maintains and endorses standardized benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance computers. SPEC’s membership includes computer hardware and software vendors, leading universities, and research facilities worldwide.
